The CBC filed a news story yesterday on Buffy Sainte-Marie that included a copy of her birth certificate. For those of you who are not familiar with the singer, she built her career by presenting herself as a Canadian First Nation's woman who was given up for adoption in the "60's scoop"; it appears her story may be a complete fabrication. Neptune in the 9th square the 1st, trine Uranus in the 5th is interesting; an unconventional (Uranus) entertainer (5th) with an imaginary (Neptune) well promoted (9th) persona (1st). The Asc ruler, Jupiter, is corrupted in a partile conjunction with Saturn (co-ruler of the 1st) [both planets are peregrine] and trine an exalted Mars in the first, it speaks to a willingness to do whatever she deems necessary in order to get what she wants which might also be inferred by Sagittarius on both the 12th and 1st.

According to her website biography, Sainte-Marie was born in 1941 on the Piapot 75 reserve in the Qu'Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan, Canada.
In 1941, it shows a generation with Cupido (community) conjunct Apollon (great extended community) in Virgo in opposition to her natal Mercury.
A generation which will become known as 'the hippies'. Her famous song 'Up where we belong', very descriptive of this aspect.

hey janegca! you beat me to it! i was going to post as i happened to see that article with the birth cert as well and wanted to share it...

i am looking at the chart in sidereal which looks like this :



the 12th house ruler -mars- is on the ascendant, while the 8th house ruler - moon - is in the 12th.. that speaks to a good degree of subterfuge and deception as i see it, but the crowning connection to all this is the neptune-rahu conjunction up at the top of the chart squaring down onto the ascendant -mars conjunction... perhaps the fact that mars rules the ic here has allowed her to imagine herself as an indigenous person in spite of the fact she is not..

there's pluto in the 8th as well... lots of creative energy to the chart and jupiter - the ascendant ruler in the 5th sign aries backs this up further..

she is experiencing a uranus return which is quite interesting... uranus is a shocker and this was a shocker!

Hi Ouranos, yes, that's the problem, according to her birth certificate and family members she was born in Massachusetts and not to First Nations people, Canadian or American; see the CBC article I linked to, they have a copy of her birth certificate.

That is interesting, according to Zain Uranus rules "exposes" and the CBC article is exactly that. There is also a Fifth Estate episode I haven't watched yet.

Ju/Ma dasha, so the chickens have come home to roost. Transiting Mars and Ju are in opposition.

That's a pretty heavy natal t-square to Asc-Mars, NN-Ne and SN.
Mars-Asc and the Sun are in a yod with 8H Pluto, in fact there are two yods. The other involves the Moon and the IC that dumps out on 5H Uranus.

Rahu is x-caste and falsehoods and with Neptune does imply deception. Rahu is also afflicting the 2nd house which also signifies falsehoods because it rules speech.

Saturn is in fall and rules the 2H of speech, also a significator of falsehoods. Saturn is afflicting Jupiter, the significator of ethics and morals in the 5H. 5H has a lot to do with creativity, intellect and emotional peace.

The Moon even though it is rising is in fall and in late degrees, and with the exact inconjunct to Uranus certainly speaks of a lot of mental tension and desire for complete independence. What better way than to create a whole new persona.

Jupiter the lord of the 4th house of home and family is exactly afflicted by Saturn. With SN in the 4H in mutual exact trine with Pluto in the 8H her connection to family is severely damaged or her perception of it with Neptune on the the other end of the Nodal axis with the NN. The t-square involving the Nodal axis and Neptune is pouring out on her Asc which is a big part of who we are astrologically.

Venus in the 2H is a good placement for a singer/songwriter. Venus does make a pesky-sesqui to Neptune which ties Venus into the fantasy/falsehood arena.

Why did Buffy feel the need to create another identity?
It could stem from a need for attention or recognition, perhaps from a desire to escape from a difficult or unhappy life or both.
My conclusion is that this is supported by this chart.

Currently: Jupiter’s return in addition to Uranus. A lot of 5/11 transit activity.
Stationing Saturn that calls us all to account sooner or later is sitting squarely on the EBM of her 3rd house hence the media attention; Saturn afflicts the 5th, 9th and 12th houses as well.

I think a lot more can be said about this chart. The fallen and weak Moon for one, what was the relationship with her mother for example? Not good is my take. The elder brother represented by Jupiter which is afflicted by Saturn, bad would be a way to describe it.

It's quite difficult to sort out her family, Jupiter rules the 1st, 12th, and 3rd and is conjunct Saturn (older brother) and co-ruler of the 1st (as Capricorn is intercepted in the 1st) and sextile Mercury which also rules the 6th of aunts and uncles (3rd from 4th). Then you've got Mars, ruler of the 4th (father, parents) conjunct the 1st and the lot of Siblings is in the 12th at 28 SA conjunct the first. And you have Mercury (ruler of the 9th, courts) in the 2nd of money; from the CBC report she was quite litigious when it came to anything that might threaten her ability to earn an income.

Curiously, the lot of the father is at 21 Libra in the 9th (courts) conjunct the 10th of the mother, sextile the Moon (mother) and trine Venus, ruler of the 10th of the mother, which is in the 2nd with the lot of the mother at 24 AQ. Again, a very tight coupling of family indicators. And by all accounts, the family, as a whole--parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews-- did collude to keep silent about her origins as none of them wanted to end up in court.
