Ack! Thank you Martin, I've had this one floating in my files for ages, never occurred to me it might be false...sigh.

As previously posted, up to this point I've looked at the births of Victoria's 9 children, the deaths of 13 people closely connected to her, 10 trips she's taken, and 5 attacks that were made on her person. These have all happened across the 12 possible profection years. Now the problem is how to identify why these events in her life occurred when they did, particularly with reference to the radix and profected charts. To that end I've spent the last week reviewing profection material in the texts I own , from Manilius to Ibn Ezra (extracts are here for anyone who's interested) which roughly covers the state of the art (at least, the parts I have access to) from 0 CE to 1000 CE.

For the most part, all the authors described a general timing technique equivalent to what we normally refer to as “profection” (turning the radix chart through one sign, or 30º from the ascendant, each year). They also all appeared to recognize that the 12 year repeating profection cycle that develops needs to be used in conjunction with at least one other general timing technique in order to differentiate the repeating cycles from each other; unfortunately, they do not agree on the particular general timing method to be used, although many of them describe a method that involves moving one or more radix elements by one degree of ascension a year. Some, like Ptolemy, advise on only moving specific elements i.e. Asc, Sun, Moon, MC, Fortune while others want to move everything both by 1º and by profection. Other techniques mentioned are:

1. primary direction of the Ascendant through the bounds (terms)
2. the triplicity ruler of the Asc appropriate to the native's age
3. the ruler of the time according to Ptolemy's Ages of Man
4. the Al Firdar
5. the appropriate planetary hour for the year (assigned to each year in turn beginning with the hour ruler at birth, mentioned by Ibn Ezra, and Abu Ma'shar as the Lord of the Orb)
6. the planet assigned to the year beginning from the ruler of radix Asc and followed by each planet in order as they appear in the radix
7. techniques described by Omar and Al-Qabisi and called, by Rob Hand, maiora esse and minora esse
8. annual revolutions (Solar Returns)
9. monthly revolutions (Lunar Returns)
10. real-time transits

Valens also describes a technique Schmidt termed Zodiacal Releasing as well as Decennials (each planet in turn ruling for 129 months) and a few others with no specific names. In other words, there was a proliferation of methods that are more headache than obvious option.

A similar problem arises with the Lots; which also grew from a handful in Dorotheus to 150 by Al-Biruni's time (see the list here on Skyscript) and are up to over 400 today judging from the Arabic Lots List on Astro-seek and list of Arabic Parts or Lots on another site. While I have found a Lot activation appropriate to the event type in every case I've looked at, the difficulty is how do you identify which lot will apply when you do not yet know which event will occur? Really need to establish a “ground rule” set.

So, I have been scratching my head trying to come up with a simple heuristic that might provide useful information when applied across the 12 possible profections. It needs to be one that will work for any event as well as for different events occurring in the same profection year. For example, Victoria gave birth to her 1st daughter (1840) and 4th son (1853) in a 10th profected year, and in the first instance she was also personally attacked while in second her friend, Lord Wellington, died. Any heuristic needs to appropriately identify the nature and timing of all four events in both years, and the same applies for mixed events in the other 11 profected years.

The first, and possibly easiest, problem is to identify the probable type of event by way of the radix and profection. Based on the recommendations found in the texts, this may done by observing:

• the radix house the profected sign is connected to
• planets and lots in the profected sign
• the planet ruling (Lord of the year) the profection sign, its condition in the radix, the house it is in, its relation to the profected sign and other planets
• any Lot with the LoY, of the same nature as the LoY, or possibly ruled by the LoY
• any planets angular to the profection sign
• any planets throwing their rays to the profected sign

Essentially we are looking to see if what is found tends in a particular direction based on the significations of the planets and the radix, profected houses and lots involved. Paulus was quite emphatic that only those elements directly involved with the profected sign and its ruler would produce events in the profection year and the other authors tend to support him in this.

Next, we want to see if the directed elements support what the profection implies. The 1º of ascensions method I've been using does appear to be a useful timing mechanism in the sense that, in all cases, events tended to manifest when appropriate planets, cusps, or lots are either:

• in a critical degree
• changing degree, or
• involved in a partile aspect with a directed or radix element

So far they have appeared to support what is shown in the profection in a general way but I need to make a more detailed survey of the events to see how they directions, profection, and radix are tied together. Because of this, and due to the proliferation of available techniques, I've decided to focus on that directly spring from the profection technique rather than techniques which often stand on their own.

For now, at least, I've decided I need to narrow down the timing to at least the month. In the profection, this means identifying the most likely profected month either through the rulership or location of the planets active in the profected year either by direction or rulership. It's also possible that the maiora esse directions may be helpful here. So far I've been approaching them the way I would a transit but what if the conditions used in the ascension directions also apply to the profected year?

What if the profected Asc directed through the 30º of the profected sign, moving into a critical degree, changing degree, or meeting a planet or ray draws focus to a specific month? Or what if all the chart elements moved through 30º create aspects to the activated directed or radix positions that help focus attention on a particular time?

As well, I've often thought the zodiac divisions were related to timing; for example, are planets in the 1st decan more apt to act early in life while those in the last decan act later (claims made for early and late degrees)? Or is the duodecima a planet occupies a clue to which profected year (or month within a year) it will most likely act in?

Anyway, this is just me talking out loud, trying to sort out how to continue. I'm grateful to everyone who has been reading along so far, you've all been very patient with my self-indulgent researches. As this continues, please, feel free to share any insights into, or questions you might have, about the process so far. This is all just an exploration and it often helps immensely to bounce things off others, especially when it is so easy to fall down rabbit holes.

The initial posts that follow will be ordered around the nine childbirth years; not quite sure, just yet, what structure they will take; that will, in part, depend on where the charts take me; hopefully they will speak clearly and, if I'm lucky, I will hear them...lol

The Profected 10th Lord of the Year
The profection is in Pisces with Jupiter (the greater benefic) as Lord of the Year. Jupiter is a diurnal planet in a diurnal chart, diurnally placed above horizon in a masculine sign and quarter so fully in hayz. He is direct, in his morning rising, although moving slower than average and will be seen to be “effective from youth”. He is in his own term in the house of sect mate (Saturn) and the two are in a state of “generosity” being in mutual reception by domicile but not in aspect. All this points to him producing the events he promises.

Jupiter is strongly placed in the radix 10th and involved in a separating sextile (0º 45') with Mars from the 12th an indication that because of her rank (10th) there will be the threat or appearance (separating) of violence (Mars) from secret enemies (12th) with little real harm (sextile) . Each incident will arise from a new source (Mars in cardinal Aries) and come on her unawares (12th) and will occur intermittently throughout her life (cadent Mars). Jupiter in the 12th of the profection reinforces the chance of some harm from him during the year or at the least an isolating event.

Jupiter is in testimony (sextile) relationships with Neptune and Uranus who occupy the profected 10th, reinforcing the Jupiter/10th connection and emphasizing a sudden (Uranus) event related to her position in the world (10th) involving dreams or deception (Neptune). Since radix Neptune occupies the 8th, it may carry a threat of death and Uranus in the radix 7th invokes situations involving conflicts or her marriage; strengthened by the fact that Jupiter rules the radix 7th and 8th and the nodal axis, in the profected chart, falls across the 2nd/8th axis reinforcing the prospect of a violent act threatening her life as the North Node is with Mars in the 2nd in opposition to the 8th. Mars is in the 3rd from Jupiter, indicating the violence may occur while Victoria is travelling; this is reinforced by Jupiter being in the 3rd from Neptune and Uranus.

Jupiter is also in testimony (trine) relationships with the Sun and Moon who are in the 5th from Jupiter, with Jupiter being the general significator of children, the Sun ruling the radix 5th and the Moon ruling the profected 5th. The radix Sun and Moon are in the 12th conjunct the Asc so what they signify directly affects the life. In the profected chart they are in the 3rd in Gemini (the radix rising sign) conjunct the the IC, connecting the 1st to family or the end of a matter. Mercury, the radix Asc ruler, is in Taurus in the same profected house but Jupiter and he are in a testimonial square relationship, with Mercury as a co-ruler of the radix 5th (Virgo being intercepted in there) and ruling the profected 4th and 7th. On the whole, the indications are for a fortunate event (trine, Sun, Moon, and Mercury occupying same triplicity, air, as Jupiter) accompanied by some physical difficulties (square, 12th, plus Jupiter throwing his opposition to the 6th of injury) involving children (5th, Jupiter and Mercury both have general significations for children).

Sign
Pisces on the profected 1st connects the 11th (friends, expectations), where it is intercepted in the radix, and the 10th (rank, status) as it is the 10th whole sign from the radix Ascendant. The house contains Pluto and Saturn.

Saturn is a malefic in his own term and the domicile of a sect mate (Jupiter). He is direct, in his morning rising, and moving at his average speed, and positioned in a good succedent house so he will be effective in delivering what he promises although he is being harmed by his close (1º 22') separating conjunction with Pluto and the close overcoming square of Neptune (0º 45') who is conjunct Uranus in the profected 10th, pointing to an unfortunate event affecting her personally (1st) and connected with her social position, occupation (10th). This reinforces what Jupiter promises of harm in the profected chart while the testimonial square of the Sun/Moon conjunction also testifies to Jupiter's other promise of a fortunate event involving children with some obstacles.

That both Mars and Venus are averse to the 1st speaks further to the notion that no serious violence (Mars) or injury (Venus ruling radix 6th) is done to her body (1st); however, the planets are in signs of equal-ascension (Pisces-Aries) indicating they will have an indirect influence during the year related to both the promised incidents.

Pisces itself, being a mutable sign, indicates the events will be transitional in nature and instigated by outside circumstances rather than by Victoria herself. This is further emphasized by the involvement of the three outer planets with both Saturn and Jupiter.

Possibilities based on Derived Positions
Other possible events could be the death of a friend as the Sun also rules the profected 6th while profected Jupiter opposes it with the 6th being the 8th from the 11th, and with Saturn, ruler of the radix 11th of friends, in the profected 1st indicating her attention being taken up by an unfortunate event involving a friend.

Possible Timing
Possible periods in which the events may show themselves are:

• between May 24 and June 24 as Saturn and Pluto are in the 1st
• between July 24 and August 24 as the Sun and Moon are in the 3rd
• between September 24 and October 24 as the Moon rules the 5th
• between October 24 and November 24 as Jupiter opposes the 6th and the Sun rules it
• any time between February and May 24 of the following year as the 10th is ruled by Jupiter in the 12th and Saturn rules Capricorn on the 11th and Aquarius on the 12th

  1840
  In 1840 there were two key events: an assassination attempt and the birth of Victoria's first daughter. The assassination attempt took place on June 10th, the birth on November 21.
  
  Timing of the Assassination Attempt
  In the maiora esse (greater being) Jupiter (ruling the profected 1st and 10th, in the profected 12th; and ruler of the radix 7th and 8th) would have been acting as the distributor as the first ray the Asc would reach would belong to the mitigated sextile (trine) of Mercury at 8 PI 56. That is 2º 58' from 5 PI 58. The maiora esse moves at the rate of 365.25/30 = 12.175 days / degree x 2.97 = 36.16 days; the Asc wouldn't reach it until June 29.
  
  The profected 1st equates to May-June 24. For the month, Jupiter would have been the distributor handing off to Uranus when the Asc reached his square; so Jupiter is acting here first by his position (12th, an unfortunate event from a secret source).
  
  The square of Uranus falls at 23 PI, measured from the Asc degree of 5 PI 58 gives 17º 24'. Converted to degrees gives 17.4 x 0.9856 (there are 31 days between May 24 and June 24, 360º / 365.25 days = .9856 days / 1º) = 17.15 days. Adding 17 days to May 24 gives 144 + 17 = 161 which gives June 10th, the day of the assassination attempt in 1840.
  
  If we count to the day, starting from the profected month's Asc (in Pisces), giving one sign equal one day, we land on the profected 6th (injury) ruled by the Sun (life). If we use 2.5 days per sign, we land on the 7th (conflict) Mercury (radix Asc ruler) ruling. You can make an argument for both methods. The month's Asc to the square of Uranus gives a stronger analogy to actual events.
  
  As a point of interest, Schwickert and Weiss, in Cornerstones of Astrology, assign persons with mental aberrations to a Neptune in bad condition and the young boy who attacked the Queen was described as “a brainless potboy” (Neptune is conjunct Uranus).
  
  Other Directions
  Looking back at the OA directions, directed Saturn was critical and directed Pluto was conjunct the radix 12th in opposition to the radix lot of Death. The north node was critical and trine directed Neptune. Directed Mars was changing degree, moving to square directed Pluto and the radix 12th. Maiora esse Saturn was critical and square the radix lot of the Destroyer while Neptune was critical and sextile the directed North Node. And in the minora esse Jupiter was square the directed lot of Enemies. So basically, all the directions reinforced the active indications in the profected chart.
  
  Timing of the Birth
  
  The next possibility for an event is the 3rd month, from July to August 24. We know the maiora esse passed to Mercury on June 29th. The next ray it hits will be Uranus' square at 23 PI 22. There's 14º 26' between Mercury's ray and Uranus'. That equates to 14.43 x 12.175 = 175.73 days which gives December 21. So the Mercury is in charge of the times until at least that point.
  
  Mercury has general significations for children and is in the 3rd but presuming we were cognizant of the general conditions in the Queen's life at the time, we would have known she was pregnant and not yet in her 9th month. And while Mercury does have significations for children, he rules a sign intercepted in the radix 5th which means it needs the force of circumstances to act and the birth is not yet physically imminent. The same reasoning applies to the possibility of of the Sun and Moon acting based on position versus rulership.
  
  We could look at the 5th (September 24 to October 24) month as it is ruled by the Moon but she is cadent, combust and the Sun has a stronger determination to children ruling the radix 5th.
  
  Looking at the 6th (October to November 24), November 21 is 28 days (325 – 297) from October 24. Adding 28º to 5 LE 58, the cusp of the 6th, gives 3 Virgo 58 which puts the profected month's Asc on the square of the Moon (motherhood). The 6th also holds Jupiter's opposition. According to Morinus, a benefic in an unfortunate house will mitigate the bad effects of the house it is in (in the 12th she's isolated for good reason) and favour the good effects of the opposite house, so a “healthy” event (a birth) rather than an “injury”.
  
  Looking back at the other directions, the directed Asc was critical and conjunct the radix lot of Children while it was changing degrees, directed Saturn was critical and trine the directed lot of Children, the directed Sun was trine Uranus (this did not come into play in the profected chart where the two are averse by house, although they are in a testimonial opposition by sign). The lot of Children in a Woman's Chart was critical in the maiora esse, and Saturn and the lot of Children, Female were critical in the minora esse.
  
  ------------------------
  This exercise has reminded me why (ignoring my lack of tact and diplomacy and my tendency for abrupt speech) I have never attempted to a be a professional astrologer, delineation work is #@#$ time consuming. Kudos to all of you out there who have the inclination and patience for it!

Profected 10th – 1852-53
Two events that impacted Victoria's life happened during a profected 10th year, on September 14, 1852 her friend, Lord Wellington, died and on April 7th, 1853 she gave birth to her 4th son. Timing of friends' death
The profected Asc would have been under Mercury from June 29 until December 21. In the profection, Mercury is in the 3rd (news) in trine to the 11th (friends) and it is sextile the profected 1st and so has a share in what happens during the year. In the radix Mercury throws a sextile to 8 PI in the 11th but does not aspect Saturn, ruler of the 11th. It also throws its opposition to the 6th (8th from the 11th) so it has some determination to the death (8th) of a friend (11th).

The month of his death (August 24 to September 24) falls in the profected 4th which has Gemini (Mercury's domicile) on the cusp. The 4th has to do with the end of matters and is the 6th (illness) from the 11th (friends). September 14 is 21 days after August 24 so the month's Asc would be at roughly 26 Gemini (5 Gemini + 21 days x 0.9856), in the sextile of Venus, friends, and ruler of the radix 6th (8th from 11th).

It's interesting that the timing appears to fall to the houses of the signs ruled rather than the signs occupied when the planets are in cadent houses, even though in the birth of her daughter the sign ruled was on a cadent house; might not mean anything but possibly worth watching.

Looking at the other directions for the event, Jupiter, ruler of the radix 8th, was critical and the directed lot of Death was inconjunct radix Jupiter and the directed lot of Death was opposed to Saturn, ruler of the 11th. At the same time the Sun, ruler of the profected 6th (8th from the 11th) was in a mitigated semi-sextile (conjunction) with Venus, ruler of the radix 6th (8th from 11th). In the maiora esse, Mars had moved to conjunct Venus and in the minora esse the 12th was critical and holds Jupiter.

Timing of son's birth
The profected Asc moved to conjunct Saturn on February 25 and would not move to the sextile of the Sun until April 17 so Saturn was in charge of the times; he rules the 11th (expectations) and 12th (isolation) in the profection and is in the 1st (body). In the radix he is determined to children by his opposition to the 5th and his mutual reception by domicile with Jupiter (general significator of children).

The month of birth (March 24 to April 24) corresponds to the profected 12th which contains Jupiter (Lord of the Year) and is ruled by Saturn (managing the time). April 7th is 14 days after March 24 so the month's Asc would be, roughly, at 18 AQ (5 AQ + 14 x 0.9856), sextile the Mars (son) and North Node (critical) conjunction. The pair are in the radix 12th and Mars co-rules the 6th (illness).

In the other directions the directed MC was critical and square the radix lot of Children, the directed Moon (ruler of the profected 5th) was changing degree and moving from a semi-sextile of the 12th to a semi-sextile of Saturn (distributor for the period and ruler of the profected month); the directed lot of Children was sextile radix Mars. In the maiora esse, the Moon was critical and Mercury (ruler of the radix Asc, general significator of children) was conjunct the radix Asc and in the minora esse the lot of Children was conjunct the radix Asc.

• Events that occurred in a profected 11th year:
• November 1, 1841 – birth of her 1st son
• April 30, 1842 – a 2nd assassination attempt
• August 30, 1853 – a trip to Dublin
• March 28, 1853 – the start of the Crimean War

  Lord of the Year
  The profection is in Aries making Mars, the contrary to sect malefic, Lord of the Year. He is direct, moving very fast but beginning to slow; he's in an applying sextile with the Sun at his morning rising; so quite strong in and of himself with the ability to take advantage of opportunities and “swiftly and directly” accomplish what he promises. In his own domicile, he is comfortable in his environment and he has the means and ability to achieve his goals. He's in a close (0º 45') separating sextile with Jupiter which may lead to the threat or appearance of violence in connection with Victoria's rank (radix Jupiter in 10th and he rules the radix 8th). Lastly, he's a nocturnal planet completely out of sect being in a day chart, above the horizon, in a masculine quarter and sign and, in the radix, occupying an unfortunate house (12th); essentially, he's a malefic in good state who, being in an unfortunate house so he will not prevent the evil of the house but will temper it with difficulties (contrary sect). Jupiter, by his sextile, also indicates a tempering of any evil.
  
  Being in and ruling the profected 1st he promises some danger to the physical body that is likely to be critical in some manner as he's with the North Node; the threat is emphasized by Mars also being the ruler of the profected 8th and Jupiter's rule of the radix 8th. He is in a testimonial relationship (trine) with Neptune and Uranus in the profected 9th (foreign countries); an indication the danger can come from there or, as Jupiter is in the profected 11th, from friends or both in the form of a war with a “friendly” nation (given Mars nature, her rank as head of state and Jupiter as ruler of the radix 7th and 8th). Given that the aspects are easy ones, the danger is likely to be managed or mitigated in some fashion.
  
  Jupiter is connected with the first and in the profected 11th could also promise some happy event concerning an existing condition (in Aquarius, fixed) possibly a child, given his general signification and opposition to the profected 5th.
  
  The trine from the 9th may also promise foreign travel (9th) given Neptune's general signification of travel, often by sea, and being disposited by Jupiter in the third from the 9th.
  
  Sign
  Aries is a cardinal fire sign, indicating events during the year will be 'new' rather than stemming directly from existing (fixed) conditions or changing (mutable) daily activities. As Aries contains Venus as well as Mars indications are for conflicts and pleasures during the year involving both secret (Mars in radix 12th) and open (Venus rules profected 7th) enemies. Events may also involve the marriage.
  
  Possible Timing
  
  The months during which events are most likely to happen are:
  • May-June 24 as the profected 1st contains Mars (LoY)
  • December-January 24 as Mars rules the 8th
  • January-February 24 as Jupiter rules the 9th and it contains Neptune and Uranus
  • March-April 24 as Jupiter is in the 11th
  • April 24 to May 24 as Jupiter rules the 12th
  Events in 1841-42
  Two major events occurred during this period: her first son was born on November 9, 1841 and a second assassination attempt was made against her life on April 30, 1842.
  
  Timing of Son's Birth
  November 9 would have fallen in the 6th month, October 24 to November 24; at first glance I can see no reason why the birth happened as this time. The month is ruled by Virgo; Mercury is in the 2nd house and throws a trine to the 6th house but Mercury is not in any relationship with Mars (LoY), and, although he is in a testimonial relationship with Jupiter (who signifies children and is closely connected to the LoY), Jupiter is averse to the 6th. In the radix Mercury does co-rule the 5th of children as Virgo is intercepted in the 5th; this might explain the event occurring in a Virgo ruled month.
  
  At the time of the birth, the profected Asc was still being managed by Mars, the birth taking place 169 days after the birthday with the Asc having moved to conjunct Mars 142 days after the birthday and not moving into the trine of Uranus until 211.8 days after the birthday.
  The event happened 16 days after October 24, putting the month's profected Asc at roughly 21-22 Virgo, not quite in the square of Uranus and still under the management of Mercury whose trine falls at 8 Virgo (Jupiter and Mars are both averse to Virgo).
  
  The other directions have the directed 11th (profection year), critical. The radix 11th is in Aquarius with directed Saturn trine the directed lot of Children. The directed 12th is critical in Aries (which is the sign of the profection) and the profected 12th holds Saturn (ruler of the radix 11th). The directed lot of Children in a Woman's Chart is critical and semi-sextile radix Mercury (the month of delivery was ruled by Mercury). Directed Uranus is changing degree (possibly why the month's profected Asc close to his square triggered the birth?). The directed Sun (ruler of the profected and radix 5th) is inconjunct the radix lot of Children, Male while its directed counterpart is conjunct the profected 6th and square the profected Asc. Perhaps this explains the 'why now' of the month?
  
  The maiora esse Jupiter is trine the directed lot of Children in a Woman's Chart which is also critical in the maiora esse; and, in the minora esse, the MC is square the directed Sun (ruler of the profected and radix 5th).
  
  Timing of the Assassination Attempt
  
  April 30 would have fallen in the 12th month, April 24 to May 24, with Pisces on the cusp; ruled by Jupiter who is closely tied to Mars (LoY) by a separating sextile. The profected 12th contains Pluto and Saturn, who are averse to both Mars and Jupiter; however, Saturn is in MR with Jupiter. The 12th (with Jupiter in the 12th from the 12th) would indicate an unfortunate and possibly violent event.
  The profected Asc moved into the trine of Neptune around February 15th and would manage the Asc until the next birthday; Neptune is said to have significations for assassins. He is in the profected 9th in an overcoming sextile to the Pluto/Saturn conjunction in the 12th and is disposited by Jupiter. Neptune is also in the radix 8th in a partile sextile with the radix 11th cusp.
  
  The event happened 6 days after April 24, putting the profected Asc for the month around 12 Pisces, under the management of Mercury whose sextile falls at 8 Pisces. Mercury is in the radix 12th, in the profection, he is in the 2nd in opposition to the profected 8th, so determined to harm.
  
  In the other directions the directed 11th is critical and directed Saturn (ruler of radix 11th) is trine the radix lot of Enemies which is also critical and in the sextile of the directed Asc. There are also directions involving Neptune, Pluto, the 12th and 8th.
  
  Events 1853-54
  Two major events occurred during this period: on August 30, 1853 she travelled to Dublin, Ireland and on March 28, 1854 Britain declared war on Russia
  
  Timing of Travel to Dublin
  August 30th would have fallen in the 4th month, August 24 to September 24, with Cancer on the cusp of the 4th, Moon as Lord of the Month. There are no planets in the profected 4th. The Moon is with the Sun (ruler of the radix 4th) in the profected 2nd (11th from the 4th); the 11th signifies friends, ambitions, social circles. The trip was made to attend an Exhibition of Art and Art Industry. Again, its not immediately apparent why the trip took place during this period, other than the fact the Moon is the general significator of travel and Mars (LoY) throws his square to the 4th. Cancer and the Moon rule the radix 3rd of travel.
  
  The profected Asc for the year would still have been under the management of Mars as August 30 is 98 days after the birthday which equates to around 14 Aries (98 / 12.175 + 5º 58')
  
  The month's Asc contacted Mercury's sextile at 8 Cancer (3 days into the month) and would not contact Mars square until 17 Cancer (12 days into the month); the trip occurred on the 6 day into the month. Mercury has significations for travel and rules the profected 3rd of travel.
  In the other directions, the directed MC was critical while Uranus (a 9th house planet) was sextile the radix MC. The directed Moon (ruler of the profected month) was changing degree. The lot of Travel was critical in the maiora esse and the lot of Journeys was critical in the minora esse.
  
  Timing on Declaration of War
  March 28th would fall in the profected 11th, March 24 to April 24. The 11th, given Victoria is the head of state, has significations allies and the House of Commons and it contains Jupiter who is closely connected to Mars, Lord of they Year and is in Aquarius, making Saturn the ruler of the month. Saturn and Jupiter are in MR. The placements could indicated going to war with or because of friends, which is what happened, Britain declared war on Russia over control of the Crimea, which Turkey (an ally of Britain's) claimed. As well, Victoria considered Russia a friend due to familial relations, which made the entire business difficult for her personally. Saturn ruling the profected 11th in the profected 12th could signify friends that become secret enemies.
  
  March 28 is 308 days into the year, putting the year's profected Asc around 1 Taurus (308 / 12.175 + 6), just coming out of a critical degree (0 Taurus). Management would be under Neptune whose trine would have been encountered at 27 Aries. Neptune is in the profected 9th with Uranus, in the radix 8th, where it is in a partile sextile to the radix 11th. Possibly he indicated her hopes that war would be avoided.
  For the month, March 28 is 4 days into the month, putting the month's Asc at around 10 Aquarius, under the management of Mercury (documents) whose square fell at 8 Aquarius.
  
  In the other directions, the directed MC is in a mitigated square (doubled in power) with the directed ASC, the directed lot the Critical Year was changing degree while its radix counterpart was inconjunct directed Mars (LoY). In the maiora esse the lot of Kingship was critical and the minora esse Asc was sextile the directed lot of the Critical Year.

  I was quite surprised to see how active Mercury was in this profected year as he didn't rule the year, was not in a profected angle, and did not rule any of the angles. Only thing I can put it down to is radix Mars being cadent in Mercury's term with Mercury ruling the Ascendant so 'acting' to fulfill Mars significations?
  
  The other possibility is that, because of Neptune's partile aspect to the 11th, I should have used 27º 04' as the degree of the profected Asc for the year, in which case Mercury would have fallen in the 1st and Mars (LoY) in the 12th. Probably need to re-work the profected elements to see how they would play out under those conditions.

Profected 11th – Adjusted Cusps based on Partile Aspect to Cusp Readjusted the cusps of the profected 11th as Neptune is in a partile sextile to the cusp. The profection itself remains in Aries as is the 11th whole sign from the radix Ascendant. This puts Mercury in the 1st. Checking the timing of the various events gives:

Son's Birth – November 9th
The event still times to the 6th month, Virgo on the cusp, Mercury ruling. It took place 169 days after the birthday, the profected Asc for the year would be under the management of Mercury, who it would have contacted around the 144 day mark. Mercury in the 8th from the 6th and averse to it.

The 9th was 16 days after the birthday, putting the profected Asc for the month under the management of the Moon whose trine he had just reached (177º 04' + 16 = 183º 04') handing off from the trine of the Sun (ruler of the radix and profected 5th).

Assassination Attempt – April 30
April 30 would have fallen in the 12th (April 24 to May 24) as before. It is 341 days after the birth putting the profected Asc for the year at around 25 Aries, under the management of Uranus whose trine he'd recently contacted at 23 Aries and who is just about to hand off to Venus at 26 Aries. Uranus is in the profected 8th (death) with Neptune.

The 30th is 6 days after the 24th, adding 6 degrees to the month's profected Asc puts it at 3 Aries, under the management of Saturn who it had recently conjoined handing off to the sextile of the Moon, ruler of the profected 4th and in the 2nd in opposition to the profected 8th.

Travel to Dublin – August 30th
August 30th would fall in the same month, August 24 to September 24, the 4th, Cancer on the cusp, Moon (travel) ruling the month. August 30th is 98 days after the birthday, putting the profected Asc for the year around 5 Taurus, under the management of Venus who it had last contacted at 26 Aries. Venus is in the profected 12th (9th from the 4th) and sends her trine to the 4th.

The 30th is 6 days after August 24. The profected Asc for the month would have been around 3 Leo, in the sextile of Moon.

Declaration of War – March 28
March 28 would have fallen in the 11th month March 24 to April 24, Aquarius on the cusp conjunct Pluto. March 28 is 308 days after the birthday putting the profected Asc for the year around 22 Pisces (308/12.175 + 327) under the management of Mercury (whose sextile was the last contact) and just about to move into the square of Uranus at 23 Pisces.

March 28 is 4 days after March 24, putting the profected Asc for the month at about 1 Pisces, about to move into the square of the Sun, ruler of the months 7th (war).

The timings were more straight-forward and appear to be more descriptive of the events than those found using the usual Ascendant degree. Other charts I've looked at with the a planet in partile aspect to the degree of a cusp have usually involved the same sign so bumping the profected Asc to the actual cusp degree was fairly easy. This chart is somewhat unusual in that the 11th is displaced by 2 signs; which is why I did not move the profected Asc degree initially, wasn't sure it would work the same but it apparently does. The partile aspect to the cusp tends to short-circuit events, sending them in a different direction either in time or by their nature.

Profected 12th
Seven of the events examined occurred during a profected 12th time period; the first four were:
1. June 26, 1830 – Becomes Heir Presumptive when George IV dies
2. July 3, 1842 - 3rd Assassination Attempt
3. August 29, 1842 – visits Scotland
4. April 25, 1843 – Gave birth to Princess Alice

The last three were:
1. October 25, 1854 – Victory at Balaclava
2. April 16, 1855 – Napoleon III visits Windsor
3. May 18, 1855 – distributes War Medals

These last three events occurred after the start of the Crimean War which began on March 28, 1854 in the preceding profected 11th period; and during a period when directed Pluto was at 7 Pisces, putting it in a mitigated conjunction (Aries and Pisces are equally-ascending signs) with the radix cusp of the 12th which is at 7 Aries and so these events will be looked at in connection with a customized chart for the profected 12th, with the profected Ascendant on 7 Taurus rather than the usual 5th degree of the radix Asc.
I'm also going to take a slightly different approach to the analysis of all seven events; I've been puzzling over how the radix, directions, and profected charts interact with each other. Theoretically I'm of the mind that all motion stems from turning the radix chart which describes the microcosm which attaches to each of us at birth and that those turnings occur on 3 levels that are defined by the Earth's relationship to the Sun, with each full 360º turning being equivalent to one year of time:

1. Primary motion – Sun moves 1º on the horizon; 1º = 1 year
2. Profected Motion – Moon completes one complete turn around the earth each month with the Sun appearing to move 30º in longitude; 30º = 1 year, 1º = 12.175 days (maiora esse)
3. Transit Motion – Earth completes one full revolution around the Sun with the Sun appearing to move 360º; 360º = 1 year, 1º = 0.9856 days

When working early with these directions alone, I found that events were most apt to occur when:

• At all three levels, directed planets, cusps, or lots moved into the critical 0 or 29th degree of a sign
• Directed or radix house cusps moved to occupy a degree in the aspect of a radix or directed planet or a directed lot moved to conjunct a radix or directed planet or cusp
• Directed planets moved to occupy a degree in the aspect of a radix or other directed planet

As I've been reviewing the individual events in light of the profection periods I've noticed that the profection appears to setup or structure the year with the three levels of direction acting as accents or triggers and so I want to take a closer look at that particular interplay: what directions are active at the time of each event and how the lord of the year, lord of the month, and their related houses interact with the three levels of directions.

Also, while I've been working on Victoria's chart I've also been working on a US Election study, looking at the radix and profected charts of candidates, and have been finding that unmitigated aversions truly are 'aversions' in the sense that rulers of the times, in aversion to their domiciles/houses, truly are ineffective in producing results while they are averse. For example, in looking at Trump vs Clinton, Clinton was in a profected 10th year with Jupiter ruling the profected 1st, 10th and the profected month the election occurred in; it (Jupiter) was involved in two aspects: it sent a trine to the profected 1st and a square to the radix 10th; all its other rays fell averse to those places or in what Valens called “ineffective degrees”; while in the charts of George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama mitigated aversions involving the profected or radix 10th appeared to help them win. I want to keep a closer eye on these in examining Victoria's profected charts.

As a result, this little series of events is going to take some time but, hopefully, shed some light on how radix indications play out over time.

Profected 12th The profection was in Taurus with Venus as Lord of the Year. The 12th (cadent) points to events during any such profected year that will most likely involve others and be out of her control. Taurus, a fixed sign, on P1, makes what is promised for the year being apt to permanently affect her life.

Venus is in Aries (cardinal) in the profected 12th (P12) and radix 12th (N12); possibly pointing to new (cardinal) events of a sorrowful nature or which constitute crises (12th) involving close relationships (Venus).

Venus ruling P1 and P6, indicates the events in the year will affect her personal life (P1) and possibly involve personal injury or illness (P6). This is reinforced by Venus being with Mars who rules P7, P12, N12 and co-rules N6; another indication events may involve violent crisis or conflicts and illness or injury but are unlikely to have a lasting effect on the life (Mars being in Aries, a cardinal sign).

P6 may also point to her father's relatives, being the 3rd from the 4th or, given her later position as head of sate, military matters (mundane 6th and Mars opposition to 6th). As well, since Venus rules P1 and P1 is the 8th from the 6th, events involving the death of her father's siblings could be indicated.

June 26, 1830 – Heir Presumptive
On June 26, 1830 Victoria became the heir presumptive when George IV (her uncle) died as her other uncle, William IV, who gained the throne, had no children.

The day of the event falls in the month corresponding to P2 (June 24 to July 24) with Mercury as Lord of the Month. Mercury is in P1 and rules P5 (4th from P2). In the radix, Mercury and Venus are averse although they both occupy N12; in the profection they are averse by both sign and house. Mercury is also the radix Asc ruler so possibly the event is not focused on her (Venus in 12th) but will affect her life (Mercury in 1st). For the month, Mercury in the 12th from the 2nd highlights the event may only indirectly involve her. Interestingly, the 2nd holds Fortune, only 2º (2 days) from the cusp equating to June 26th, the day of the event.

By OA (1º) directions:

• the directed 2nd is changing degree (16 GE -> 15 GE); emphasizing the month in question and moving from the square of directed Saturn (16 PI) ruler of P10 and N10 (natal 10th) and the trine of radix Jupiter (16 AQ in P10, N10)
• while directed Jupiter is changing degree (24 AQ -> 23 AQ) and moving into a mitigated sextile (trine) of radix Uranus (23 SA) in P8
• the directed lot of Death is changing degree (3 LE -> 2 LE) and moving to conjunct N4 (2 LE) and form a mitigated sextile (trine) with the radix Sun (2 GE), its ruler

Saturn represents older persons, authority and he rules both P10 and N10 so indicates the ruling authority or King. A trine connects him to Jupiter in P10 and N10 and ruling P8 and N8; reinforced by directed Jupiter in trine to radix Uranus in P8 and the lot of Death's directions which bring in the end of matters (N4) in connection with a royal (Sun) person.

Profection 30º directions (maiora esse):

• the 2nd and 11th (10th from the 2nd) are critical at 29 GE and AQ (end of a matter, condition?) emphasizing both the 1º directions and the indications for the profected month
• Venus (LoY) is critical at 29 AR and rules both P6 and N6 (uncles) and their death (P1 is 8th from P6)
• Neptune and Pluto, both in P8, are critical at 0 CP and AR (new beginnings through means of a death?)
• lot of Death (24 LI) is trine directed Jupiter (reinforcing the 1º directions) and the other is at 13 LE square the directed Sun (13 TA) ruler of the radix lot

Profection 360º directions (minora esse):

• all the elements that are critical in the maiora esse are critical in the minora esse
• the lot of Death is trine the directed Sun, its ruler

There is a layering of directions involving houses, planets, and lots in both the profected and radix charts that are descriptive of the event.

July 3rd, 1842 – Third Assassination Attempt

The day of the event falls in P2 so conditions of the profected year and month are essentially the same as the last event; the differences are to be found in the 1º, 30º and 360º directions.

Directed Mercury (0 AR), the ruler of the profected month is critical in P1 (12th from the 2nd). The directed 11th (0 AQ), (with P11 and N11 holding Saturn and Pluto), and the lot of Enemies (0 GE) are also critical.

This time it is the directed 12th, not the 2nd, that is changing degree, moving from the critical 29 AQ to 28 AQ. The radix and profected 12th are both in Aries with Mars in the 12th with Venus (LoY).

In the maiora esse, the 11th (0 PI), 2nd (0 CA) and Pluto (0 AR) are critical along with Venus (LoY, 29 AR) who is sextile the lot of Assassination who has moved to 29 AQ in the mairoa with Pluto sextile the lot of Enmity at 0 CA.

And in the minora esse, Saturn has moved to conjunct radix Mercury, ruler of the radix Asc and lord of the month.

The month (Gemini) is emphasized by directed Mercury being critical. The possibility of danger to her person is indicated by the 12th changing degrees and holding Mars (violence) and Venus (LoY). The triggering planets in the maiora and minora (Saturn and Pluto in P11, N11) are emphasized by the directed 11th being critical. Note that the 11th is the 10th from the 2nd – angular, and so the planets are strong in the month.

August 29, 1842 – Visits Scotland

The day of the event falls in P4, Leo with the Sun, Lord of the Month, is in P1, 10th from P4 so strong in the month. Mercury (general significator of travel) is also in P1 and throws a trine to the 9th (travel) while Venus (LoY) is in the 9th (travel) from P4.

The directed 11th (29 CP) is critical, as is Mercury (0 AR). Directed Saturn (in N11, P11, ruler of P9, N9) is changing degree, moving to sextile (trine) radix Neptune. And directed Pluto (also in N11, P11) is sextile the radix Sun (LoM).

In the maiora, the lot of Travel (29 AR) and lot of Journeys (29 PI) are both critical.

In the minora, Uranus is critical (0 AR) conjunct directed Mercury (travel).

That the month may involve an event involving her position is shown by the Sun (LoM) being angular in the 10th for the month; the possibility of a pleasurable event is indicated by the Sun ruling N5. The type of event (travel) is indicated by Saturn (ruler of P9/N9) changing degree and by its forming an aspect with Neptune (travel). Pluto sextile Sun may point to some coercion or cooperation in getting the travel accomplished. Mercury (travel, ruler of radix Asc) is critical and with the Sun in P1 (10th from P4) is triggered in the minora.
I can't specifically see anything that highlights P4 directly as being important, except, possibly that its ruler is angular from it.

April 25, 1843 – Birth of Princess Alice

The day of the event falls in P12, Aries on the cusp with Mars in Aries in P12 with Venus (LoY). The 12th has to do with isolation, hospitals, and being opposite the 6th, illness or injury.

The directed 11th is critical (20 CP) again and this time sextile a critical Mercury (29 PI), who is ruler of P5, changing degrees to conjunct radix Saturn (ruler of N11) and with Jupiter (ruler of P11 and general significator of children) closely sextile Mars (LoM).

The planets changing degree are the directed Sun (ruler of N5) moving (18 AR) to conjunct radix Mars (17 AR) and square the radix lot of Children (17 CA); directed Mars (4 PI), moving to square the directed lot of female children (3 PI), and Venus (LoY), who is changing degrees but not involved in any directed aspect.

In the maiora, the MC (29 AQ), Sun (29 GE) and SAN (29 GE) are all critical with the Asc (3 CA) trine the directed lot of female children (3 PI).

In the minora, Uranus is critical in trine to directed Mercury (children) and sextile the directed 11th while Venus (LoY) is sextile the directed Sun and Pluto conjuncts directed Mars

And again there's a layering with like indicators being emphasized at each level. As well, looking at these last four events, the position of the Lord of the Year relative to the profected month appears to indicate a focus for the month's events, which would make sense. The position of the Lord of the Month by angularity appears more important than the main focus of the month's event. Have to try to remember to keep on eye on those points going forward.
