A planet for the brain in medical astrology

1
Hi everyone,

I've stumbled upon such significations/affinities as the Moon (emotional part / bulk of the brain) and Mercury (rational part).
My intuition tells me that the Sun may have something to do with it. The Sun usually has the role of a general manager/overseer of things, which rings true when we think of the brain. I may be wrong though.
Also: Mercury sound right, as mercury has to do with decision making and rational thought.
The Moon, not sure about that one. Maybe only when we consider the physical composition / feel / touch of the brain as an organ. Which is (I guess) soft, squashy and surrounded by fluids. Probably cold to the touch too.

Do you know how traditional authorities came to the Moon and to Mercury?
What do you think?

hi dima

the mind or the brain? the mind has always been associated with mercury ( conscious ) and moon ( subconscious ), but maybe the brain is different... the head is associated with the sign aries which is ruled by mars. and exaltation of sun.. perhaps the first house mimics the first sign aries too.. i await the traditional pundits response to this question as mine is not that..

In medical astrology, Mercury is associated with the brain, the nervous system, the respiratory system, the thyroid and the sense organs.

The functions of the cranial nerves are sensory, motor, or both. Sensory cranial nerves help a person see, smell, and hear. Conversely, motor cranial nerves help control muscle movements in the head and neck.

H.M. King Nader Räm has correlated Jyothi's with the deep seated basal ganglia, the 12 cranial nerves, the 28 monoaminergic cell groups of the brain ster, and the twelve areas of the cerebral cortex.

Houses and cerebral cortex

Houses = cerebral cortex (the outermost layer of our brain). It plays a key role in memory, thinking, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, emotions, consciousness and functions related to our senses. You can Google the meaning of each areas.

House 1- Occipito-temporal regions of the cortex
2 - Right occipital area
3 - Right parietal area
4 - Right limbic area
5 - Right frontal area
6 - Right prefrontal area
7 - Right and left temporal areas
8 - Left prefrontal area
9 - Left frontal area

11- Left parietal area
12 - Left occipital area

Hi Dima, I tend to associate the Sun with the brain, too. Here are a few quotes where it seems to be alluded to:

Valens: In a nativity the all-seeing sun, nature’s fire and intellectual light, the organ of mental perception...

Firmicus: But of the parts of the body, he owns the head of every living being, the spirit, and the right eye.

Abu Mashar: The nature of the Sun is hot, dry. He signifies the life-giving soul, and light and splendor, reason and intellect and knowledge and middle age.

(sources listed here)

And, Lee Lehman's The Book of Rulerships lists:

Brain: Sun: Lilly, Ptolemy, Ramesey, Saunders
Brain: Moon: Dariot, Lilly, Partridge, Saunders
Brain: Mercury: Lilly, Ramesey, Saunders

Brain Disease: Sun: Lilly, Ramesey, Saunders
Brain Disease: Mercury: Lilly, Partridge, Ramesey

Brains: Mercury: Dariot
Brains: Sun: al-Biruni

Another reason for Mercury is the complexity of what is known as the 'gut-brain axis' (GBA)
There is a crosstalk that have revealed a complex communication system between the gastrointestinal and the brain functions (affect, motivation, higher cognitive functions).
Intestines ruled by Virgo (Mercury) Antiscia Aries (the envelope of the brain).
Blessings!

Fortunately, in medical astrology, there are planets responsible for the brain.

When it comes to the brain's cognitive function, it is the Sun, according to its governing and coordinating principle.

According to its 1st determination, if it concerns brain tumors or physiological changes in white matter, the Moon is responsible for it.

Finally, according to its universal nature, Mercury is responsible for neural connections and primarily the functioning of motor and speech centers.

There are no other planets that naturally govern the brain.

Any planet related to the 1st house in a medical chart (decumbiture or medical horary) can accidentally become the ruler of the brain. In the case of medical horary, it is also possible for a planet in its own sign to become the significator of the head and everything associated with it. You can read more about this technique in the works of Oscar Hoffman.
My best,
Aleksei Borealis (aka Mark Rusborn)

Qualified horary craftsman.

Originally, medical astrology had a 'holistic approach'
"...the ancient art of medicine was the application of a philosophy, designed to develop harmonious interaction with external influences and the cycles of nature."
https://skyscript.co.uk/humours.html

Instead of isolating the brain as an organ, we should view it as a 'function' in the body and then the planets and the signs will start to give meaning to the brain.
It acts as a control center and provides information on diseases among other things.
I tend to give this to Mercury but as a transmitter of the information but this is a short view.
The whole chart is the brain in a holistic approach. If we take the ASC to represent the environment, this is a key factor in the functioning of the brain. The 7th House, our relationships will also influence our brain. Having a majority of our planets in Water signs and so on.

Because the brain is related to so many functions in our body, a holistic approach should provide a better approach.
Blessings!

Hello Markrusborn,

I remember my temporary table neighbor during additional medical training in the 90s. At that time, she asked me to analyze her horoscope for health aspects and I named the heart, which she also confirmed from the past. Among other things, she had ascendant Leo with the Sun in the 1st house. But I don't remember whether the sun was in Leo or Virgo.

What I want to say is that it can be a little dangerous and also misleading to assign a special house or sign to the central control organ of the brain.
