When he was 21 years old, after life-threatening pneumonia and three cysts, Bergoglio had part of a lung excised.
Above is Bergoglio (Pope Francis )'s Natal chart & Solar Arc for 21.5 years of age, as I couldn't find the exact time of his operation
Using modern astrology, I note Chiron is exact on his Ascendant & South Node in his 1st house,
His Solar Arc Asc on 0 degree of Leo is conjunct Pluto. His 6th house Sun conjunct NN moves by Arc to
sextile Saturn( note they are natally square, so this is not positive). Saturn is an 8th ruler & the Sun a 6th ruler, indicative of an operation.
In his natal chart, he has Chiron South node conjunction in the 12th in Gemini. The depositor Mercury cannot see his sign (inconjunct a health issue ), the Gemini link suggests a lung issue to be a problem in this nativity. At the beginning of 2025, Saturn squares this Chiron SNode combination as a Saturn return from the 8th to the 12th. He develops pneumonia, one further issue as regards the solar Arc chart at death, the solar Arc Hades was 3 degrees past the Asc at 13 degrees of Cancer, which by coincidence is the transiting position of Hades. In the secondary progression chart, as previously mentioned, the ruler of the 8th & 6th joins the 8th house. So many modern astrological themes tie in to the passing of Pope Francis, that is not to take away from traditional techniques, which I also find useful in the interpretation of future events.

Hello Zosma,

Just to add a few midpoints to your analysis.
Pluto on the Ecliptic is at 28 Can 17 but by Right Ascencion it is at 0 Leo 56... in the midpoint MA/UR of surgery.
By direct motion or by converse motion in the directed chart you show, Pluto reached the natal AS with Chiron and SN at the age of 21 years old.
Surgeries when Pluto is involved often indicates the removal of an organ.

Natal Moon L1 at 12 Aqu 33 is conjunct Part of Sickness in the 8th.
And by direct PD, the MO L1 reached the square to natal MA, in the midpoint SU/MO. They did not have all the antibiotic supportive care that we have today and they just removed one lung instead of treating the infection. (Mars in Detriment).

Best to you,
Ouranos
Blessings!

Lunar Returns for Pope Francis

In recent years I haven’t worked much with lunar returns, but I think I had decided that they mainly related to health. I took a renewed interest in these returns when I saw that Pope Francis’ death happened only hours before the date of a new lunar return. Which returns suggest his death? I set up four returns, two tropical and two sidereal for study. These returns also show the time difference between tropical and sidereal returns, approximately two hours between returns, enough to shift planets in relation to angles.

Of the four returns (posted below) the March 25 sidereal lunar seems to indicate poor health and perhaps the possibility of death. As always, planets positioned at the chart angles are seen as most important. I often consider partile major aspects to the angles.

TROPICAL MARCH 25 LUNAR RETURN

There are no planets closely conjunct angles in this chart, though Mars in the 6th house in partile quincunx (India's 8th house aspect) the ascendant and trine the zenith suggests an accident or possibly illness. Uranus below the ascendant conjoins the natal Part of Fortune. I would not be sure how to interpret that conjunction.

SIDEREAL MARCH 25 LUNAR RETURN

This chart seems to suggest a critical heath month. Transiting Saturn and natal Saturn straddle the zenith, Saturn as ruler of the natal 8th and 9th houses. Both Saturns are in Jupiter’s mansion, natal Jupiter being placed in the 7th house of a person’s death. Astrologers have noted that Jupiter often appears in charts at the time of death, and here Jupiter is on the ascendant in the Moon’s mansion. Moon is placed in the natal 8th house,

TROPICAL APRIL 21 LUNAR RETURN

This tropical chart appears to be more critical than the March 25 lunar return, with Mars is at the MC, having passed natal Pluto. In Francis’ birth chart posted by Deb, Mars is lord of the 5th house Scorpio. Aries is not on any house cusp. Uranus is above this lunar 7th cusp, house of death, and conjoins the radix part of fortune. So considering the angles we’d be looking at transiting Mars and Uranus.

SIDEREAL APRIL 21 LUNAR RETURN

Time wise this lunar return began shortly after Francis’ death. It’s striking that both natal and transiting nodes fall on the angles. I’ve noted, and I think other astrologers have noted as well that the nodes are present in charts that affect a great number of people. Of course the pope’s death brought a world wide response, especially from Roman Catholics as well as world leaders who paid their respects to the pope in one way or another.

The stellium of planets in the natal 7th (house of a person’s death) falls on the lunar ascendant, the Sun of course drawing the world’s attention to the death of a religious leader. The key planets in this chart are the four nodes, radix Sun on the ascendant and transiting Saturn and Venus at the nadir. Not angular in this lunar return, but transiting Sun is on the natal MC in the lunar 5th. So we have natal Sun on the lunar ascendant and transiting Sun at the natal MC, the Sun drawing the world's attention. As a chart, this lunar return doesn’t symbolize a potential death as such, but does show the world’s response.

Therese,
From what you know, what do the lunar mansions say.
Not something I am totally familiar with.
Thanks for asking, Ouranos. In 2008 I wrote an article on how astrologers have viewed the mansions through the centuries up to the present day of massive innovation. This article is short and still valid:

http://www.snowcrest.net/sunrise/AANaks ... istory.htm

Also in 2013 I posted here on Skyscript my findings when the Sun and Ascendant were in the various mansions. The data was from the then available AstroDatabank we had on our XP computers.

https://skyscript.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7562

As of today I’ve come to view the mansions (formerly referred to as the 28 nakshatras, now 27 equal mansions) as various “tones” related mainly to activities. They are not psychological as the planets are. For example, my own mansion Svathi seems to be a mansion of scholarship and occult interests. (This mansion falls in tropical Scorpio.) The first mansion in sidereal Aries (Ashvini) seems to relate to business activities.

The mansions, of course, are related to various stars and asterisms. Some observed tropical traits actually belong to a lunar mansion. There is a great deal of imagination in recent books published on the mansions by western astrologers.

If I want to study data on a mansion I consult Prash Trivedi’s The 27 Celestial Portals or Radhe’s The Divine Forces of the Lunar Nakshatras. But all this needs a great deal of study and research. It’s an area that we really know little about.

I use the mansions primarily in the Krishnamurti system of timing of events. If a planet is transiting through a particular mansion, I look to the natal planet associated with that mansion to understand the results of that transit. There are many examples of this technique in my Skyscript posts as in the Pope’s lunar mansion posts above.

Ouranos, I’m sorry. This is a very brief reply to your question as I’ve had little time with continuing health problems playing their part. But I appreciate your question!
