Astrological Lodge History of Astrology Seminar

1
The Astrological Lodge of London's History of Astrology Seminar will be on 25th October 2009.

Venue: 50 Gloucester Place, London W1U 8EA

It's that time of year again...

Hope that some of you can make it.

Speakers:

Dr Vanessa Chambers
A very serious effect on morale: Astrology and the Second World War
During the Second World War a significant number of people regularly read their horoscope in the newspaper and around one in ten allowed the forecasts to play a part in forming their conduct. This had massive implications during wartime and the government was aware of the potential for newspaper horoscopes to affect public morale and encourage a tendency towards fatalism.
This talk is based on Vanessa?s PhD thesis, currently being revised for publication. Vanessa now holds an honorary fellowship at the University of Exeter.

Mark Cullen
Comets in Traditional Astrology
Throughout the millennia the appearance of comets were popularly viewed as a malefic omen. Throughout the astrological tradition numerous techniques were developed which sought to interpret the influence of comets in terms of their particular characteristics and where they would have most impact in the world.
Mark is secretary and programme co-ordinator of the Scottish Astrological Association.

Gill Dorren
Carl Jung?s Astrological Experiment
Gill will be looking at the astrological experiment of Carl Jung and the joint publication with W Pauli The Interpretation of Nature and the Psych. She will discuss the events that brought these two giants together, who came from such different spheres as well as the experiment itself.
Gill is a past Vice-President of the Astrological Lodge of London and editor of Astrology Quarterly.

Chris Mitchell
The Development of the Zodiac in Mesopotamia
Chris Mitchell will look at how the zodiac developed, and finds some surprisingly ancient hints of the zodiac in Babylonian literature that we as astrologers would recognise today.
Chris will shortly be studying for a PhD at University College, Wales in Lampeter.

Kim Farnell
Gentleman Astrologer: William Ramesey
Born in 1626, the author of Astrology Restored was one of the first writers in English, rather than Latin, on astrology. The Second World War led to the loss of innumerable texts and Ramesey?s contribution was almost forgotten until his work became available in reprint during the last few years. This talk looks at Ramesey?s life and his contribution to astrology.
Kim Farnell is currently President of the Astrological Lodge of London.
