I’m delighted to have been invited to partner in this event with the illustrious Rob Hand. It is timed for the Thanksgiving weekend as a clear indication of the mutual appreciation and respect we have for each other. Some people have overstretched the differences between us, not realising Rob Hand and I are long-standing friends who have always enjoyed our shared passion for astrology as well as our stimulating debates. First and foremost, we are both concerned that good astrology research continues unabated, free of entrenched assumptions, in a way that honours the history, cultural development and practice of astrology.

Do you mean you got no response from the registration address Carl?
I’m sorry to hear that. I wasn’t involved with the administration of the event, but I gather that demand was much heavier than anticipated, and not everyone could be accommodated. I am sorry, though, if you didn’t get your email acknowledged, but perhaps that will happen yet, as I know that the after-event administration is still ongoing.

It was a very heartening event for me. Rob and I underlined how much we share a conviction that research into ancient astrology must continue, with all questions asked, and nothing should be treated as ‘established’ in regard to historical research at this point. We both underlined how important the principle of angularity is in any chart, and more than anything else, we were keen to show that astrologers can engage in discussion of critical issues with ease, looking at points where we have different opinions with curiosity, and not feeling any sense of having to ‘toe a line’ or adopt a position of orthodoxy. In view of a misleading impression that has been given out by some, we hoped the event would show the astrological community the unquestionable depth of long-standing friendship and mutual respect that flows between Rob and I, in full recognition that we might critically assess each other's research points or have different approaches to certain practices (which troubles neither of us in the slightest). I felt privileged to be a part of something that is likely to be one of the last remaining online seminars Rob Hand will give, and very honoured by the way he recommended astrologers to take my research work on house systems seriously.

As a follow up, we received this message from Sheila Roher – such a nice message, she gave permission to share it:
I just want to express my deep gratitude to Deb an Rob for yesterday’s discussion, rich in both illumination and civility (two qualities which need support and encouragement these days and which you both demonstrated so beautifully).
Beyond all the notes I took on Valens and other historical figures, the two comments which are really moving my soul are
(and these are my summaries, you both were more eloquent!):

from Rob: There is nothing inherently good or evil in a chart. Some energies may be more easily redeemed, and some may require more work— but that work may be the making of the soul.
from Deb: Whatever house system or techniques we use, the most important thing is for the astrologer to work on their own spiritual integrity so we won’t misuse the material or be pulled by strong passions.

Thank you so much!
