Hey All,

I'm hoping anyone here can recommend a solid reference—preferably academic or well-sourced—that discusses the historical dating of the Jaimini Sutram (Upadesha Sutras). I know traditional accounts place it quite early, possibly Vedic-era via its connection to Vyasa, but I'd love to know if any scholars or historians have weighed in on a more precise or evidence-based timeline.

Any leads on books, papers, or even credible online sources would be much appreciated.

i have a copy of upadesa sutras.. full title is jaimini maharishi's upadesa sutras.. translated by sanjay rath and dated new delhi 18/8 1997.. there is interesting commentary in the preface which i could share if you are interested..

Thanks, James. I'm definitely interested, though I suspect Sanjay Rath adheres to the traditional dating for Jaimini and the Sutras—somewhere around 1200–1500 BCE. If he offers more than that in terms of historical context or textual analysis, I’d really like to hear what he has to say.

From what I’ve found, the dating of the Jaimini Sutras is all over the map, and there doesn’t seem to be any universally accepted scholarly consensus. That’s why I was hoping someone might know of a peer-reviewed article or well-researched source that digs into the historical development and possible dating of the text.

The only scholarly source I am aware of is Pingree's Jyotiḥśāstra, which simply says (p. 96):

Before 1729 when the earliest dated manuscript was copied Jaimini (or rather someone using the sage’s name) composed the Upadeśasūtra, a collection of 1031 sūtras (there is also a set of verse kārikās that summarize them) divided into four adhyāyas, each of which has four pādas.

Pingree's Census of the Exact Sciences in Sanskrit (vols. A3 and A4) lists all manuscripts and editions known to him at the time of publication (1981, the same year as Jyotiḥśāstra). None predates the 18th century, and I am not aware (and apparently, nor was Pingree) of any work dated earlier that refers to the Upadeśasūtra. So probably late 17th to early 18th century.
