Jorge mentioned the 9-Star-Ki system. Actually, it's more or less Japanese, however, it is rooted in Chinese tradition.

9-Star-Ki can also be used for mundane matters. When using it this way one should take into account that there is a hierarchy of cycles:
Each year has its special Star.
e.g. 2012 is Six, 2011 was Seven, 2010 was Eight, 2009 was Nine, 2008 was One ( 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-9-8 ..)
A close study of the eight trigrams will reveal the essence of the Stars (Five has no corresponding trigram, being the naturale center of energetic processes). - So nine years for this - "mini-cycle".
Moreover, one Star rules nine years. Presently it's Star Three (4/Febr. 2009 -3rd February 2018). 9*9=81 - medium cycle.
This cycle is also embedded into a bigger one: 729 years' cycle (9 times 9 times 9 = 729) - maximum cycle.
The present maximum cycle started on 4 th February 1955 - Star Nine.
Star Nine (trigramm Li - "Fire") the time from 2/1955 to 2/2036.
The subordinate medium cycles go like this:
2/1955 - 2/1964 - Star 9 - Fire
2/1964 - 2/ 1973 - Star 8 - Earth
2/1973- 2/ 1982 - 7 - Metal
2/ 1982 - 2/1991 - 6 - Metal
2/ 1991 - 2/2000 - 5 - Earth
2/ 2000 - 2/2009 - 4 - Wood
2/ 2009 -- 2/ 2018 - 3 Wood

So it's presently ...

Nine Fire (maximum) - 3 Wood (medium ) - 6 Metal (year 2012)

One can say a lot about this. I might add some observations concerninmg the present (and some past cycles).

The year given above is 1912, the month April that year.
The month the Titanic sank.

The maximum cycle (see above) here was the one from 1874 (Febr.) to 1955 (Febr.). It was ruled by Star One ? referring to trigram K'an.
The medium cycle we are dealing with here was the one from 2/ 1910 till 2/1919 ? ruled by Star Five. It has often been discussed whether or not a year (or period) ruled by Five ? The ?Yellow Star? ? is one mainly ?advantageous? or ?disadvantageous?. It is the time when the pattern returns to its fundamental structure. What may happen here can often be likened to the sudden emerge of the totally unexpected - as it can be found in the picture of the awakening dragon. This is what happened in 1914 ? a Five Star year within a nine years? cycle also ruled by Five: the sudden outbreak of WW I.
And it is important to remember the Star One looming in the background ? Water, and its hidden perils (?the Abysmal?).
1912 was a Seven Star year. Metal. Modern ships are made of metal. Metal was present twice when the Titanic sank, it was also present in the Month Star ? Six. Transport is commonly referred to Star Four, nonetheless Seven is closely connected with what happened. Star Seven ? ?Dui?. Seven/Dui is hard and intractable inside but yielding outside. It met Six ? metal, the edge of metal: cutting. And Six/Ch?ien is related to ice. It was ice cutting the body of the ship: ?yielding outside?. Dui/Lake is said to bring about "smashing and breaking apart?. Why? You never know what might be looming under the seemingly quiet surface of the lake. It should always be taken into account that the Fu Hsi's order (?World of Thought arrangement") permanently shines through the King Wen?s seasonal LoShuorder. So ?behind? Lake there is Water.

The following is the present maximum cycle (left) together with the present medium cycle (2/2009-2/2018)
Since 1955 Fire has been the ruler of the maximum cycle.
It is interesting (and worth studying) the interactions of the two cycles. E.g. 1964-1973 with Star Eight being the ruler of the subordinate cycle: the time of social protest and upheavals - for Star Eight usually brings about a time of transition from old conditions into new beginnings.

Now, since 2/2009 it's been Nine/Three - Fire/Wood. The preceding medium cycle was ruled by Star Four - also Wood. Wood supports Fire, it engenders it. So, Fire since 2000 has consistently become hotter: remember the countless suicidal attacks, the wars, the explosions ... Star Four is found in the top-south position of the maximum chart which has certainly enhanced that tendency. It has also supported a new and spreading global idealism - however including the dangers of fanaticism.
Three - corresponding to Chen/Thunder is less diplomatic than Four/"Wind". Fire has become more aggressive. There will be accelerations in a number of fields.

A closer study can reveal a lot: e.g. see Seven/Metal/money - in the eastern position in the maximum cycle: revolutionary (and partly risky) developments of currencies. See the Euro: 2011 was a Seven/Metal year, and it's Six/Metal this year. We see Seven in the East in the maximum chart, we find it in the fiery South in the medium chart. Fire "controls" Metal - which does not necessarily mean that it will just consume it. There is also the chance that something valuable(and more stable) will finally be the result.
One might look back at the last 9 years with Star Three ruling - which was from 2/1928 to 2/1937. This was the rise of Fascism and National Socialism and the time of global depression. So, without any doubts there are parallels (and there are six more years to come within the present medium cycle!). However, the background then was a different one, the ruler of the maximum chart (1874-1955) was Star One/ Water.

Very interesting.
In 1929 we were in 1 water cycle which placed the 5 in house 9 which favoured dictators. The current 9 cycle places 5 in house 1 which is bad for dictators. The 3 makes the 9 even stronger. The 7 in house 3 is going nowhere.It lies in its opposite house.Bad for Finance. The 7 in h9 on the other hand is mixed balanced as it controls the 7 but at same time empowers it

well observed. Five in Nine indeed favoured dictatorship. And as the events (e.g.) in Arabian countries show it's (luckily) become hard to be a dictator nowadays (poor Kims and the like...)
Actually, it might be interesting to find out more about the relations between the mundane charts and mundane personalities - i.e. generally politicians.
With a view to what has already been mentioned above:

Note that Hitler was a double Three: Year Three Star, month Three Star.
His success was mainly due to the fact that there was a close clink to the nine years' cycle referred to above.

I made a mistake ,6 rules banking,7 rules management. The current crisis startede in 2008 a 1 year, 3 was in its opposite house hence 8(real estate) was going nowhere,cause the real estate crisis. 6 was in north(dangerous for banks especially in North like Iceland and Ireland).
The following year began the 3 cycle. Obama is a 3. The 6 is in house 8 of revolution,so plenty of change for banking system in coming years. 4(tourism and air travel) is out of place so bad for tourism, and 2 (schools,agriculture going nowhere).
This year two is also going nowhere, there have been draughts in Spain,which may lead to food and water shortages(house 9 dries water)
